After 26 years practicing together, Peter Grundy & Tilly Northedge split in 2006 to pursue their own interests, Tilly went traveling and Peter continued to work in design.
Information graphics are often dry and uninviting, but Peter and Tilly adopted an illustrative approach to revolutionise the way information is presented.
Back in 1996 Hugh Aldersey Williams, the then Editor-at-Large of Graphis Magazine did a feature on Grundy & Northedge and categorized their work into Pictograms, Diagrams and Narratives. Their pictograms, such as those for United Distillers are models of the art of condensation, their diagrams such as the spread for Creative Review on their carbon footprint turns information into knowledge, and their narrative work such as the letterforms for the VW Save Fuel campaign, is a lesson in the aesthetic value of ‘the fresh’ in storytelling. But outside the work, keeping fresh began to become a challenge. By the end of the 90s Grundy believes that Northedge had begun to lose heart, especially with requests from clients who often didn’t seem interested in creative solutions.
Their work is very distinctive and Grundy continues to use this style for his more recent work. With some well-known names behind them… Shell, Guardian, United Nations, VW, BT and so on, they have had an incredibly successful career and given the scenery of information graphics a new benchmark for which to work from.

Thank you Peter. So nice for you to say so.
Tilly and I were at Arts Ed Park Lane in the 60’s many of us old girls wonder where she got to. Is she the same Tilly Northedge as in your firm? Please ask her if she is to get in touch with me as Rocky Janice Joyce et al are interested in keeping in touch.
Thanks
Hi Rosanna Achilleos-Sarll. I don’t actually know Tilly, I just wrote a blog post about their work. Hopefully you catch up with her some time in the future.
