This is the second product by David Irwin to appear on ATELIER TALLY this week. I featured his Working Girl chair in a trend review. Now I wanted to focus on the M lamp for Juniper.
What immediately strikes me about this light is that it solves a problem that genuinely hadn’t been solved up until now. I say this with some experience of trying to find a product just like this. A light for many occasions, the M lamp could be used as a task lamp on a desk through to taking it away camping to create a warm, bright hanging light for late night reading.
It stands at just 9″ (or 22cm in old money), projects up to 3,000 lux of warm light from its movable head and is approximately equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb. In its standard mode the Lamp’s dimmable LED will emit 1,000 lux of light for more than 18 hours on a single charge. And in the case of a power outage, the M Lamp will automatically illuminate with enough power to light up a small room, making it a useful companion in times of need.
I’m really just left thinking ‘why has nobody thought of doing this before?’
And having just won the Core77 Design Award for Furniture & Lighting, David Irwin is most certainly a designer to keep a close eye on. The jury said of his lamp “A poetic lamp which draws on the collective unconscious, from miners lamps to boat lamps. This is an obvious object that causes an immediate emotional connection. An object that says colour.”
Born in Northern Ireland in 1986, David Irwin graduated in Three Dimensional Design at Northumbria University in 2007. He completed a fellowship on the Designers in Residence Programme at Northumbria’s School of Design in 2010 and subsequently went on to establish his own Industrial design Studio in 2011.
His design focus is rooted in material exploration and driven by a desire to assign purpose to both traditional and contemporary manufacturing processes and to combine a strong concept with fundamental usefulness.
