Stop! In the name of Barbie

We all know that Barbie turned 50 years old last year, but she doesn’t stop turning heads.

Selfridges has teamed up with Barbie designer of twelve years, Stacey McBride-Irby, an African-American mother of two who wanted to create a line of dolls more reflective of her daughter and community.

One of the dolls that Stacey chose to design was in the shape of diva Diana Ross…

“Sitting in the car on my way to school or church, my Grandfather would play all of Diana Ross’s hits over and over again. It was part of my true musical education and a sound that still permeates my tastes today. Every one of her album covers was on par with a Vogue shoot and with her perfect make up and curly flowing hair, she was a style icon for many black women around the world. Her songs “Boss” (1979), “Love Hangover” (1976) and “Upside Down” (1980) are still on heavy rotation in my music collection.”

If you are passing Selfridges in the next week or so, pop by the Wonder Room and take a look at the few dolls on show.
