You can stand under my umbrella

I have fallen head-and-shoulders over heels for fashion accessory company, London Undercover. On one of my usual ‘clicking links’ journey’s I discovered this site and instantly became besotted.

London Undercover was established by designer Jamie Milestone in 2008 with the aim to turn around the humble umbrella and return to its rightful position as a fashion accessory.

With the celebration of British Culture at the core, London Undercover brings to life what is generally seen as a boring, disposable, last-minute item. An obvious canvas for expression, the designs aim to encourage people to enjoy and take pride in what is, an indispensable, quintessentially British accessory.

The cheeky hidden colour is my favourite part of the designs as this is quintessentially British… to have some eccentricities hidden away but knowingly present.

But on top of the obvious quality in design and manufacture, the umbrella’s and accessories are, where possible, made from recycled canvas fabrics, frames, packaging and tags.

Quick, where is my debit card.

50s posters found at Notting Hill Gate Station

Thanks to Huxley for this great share

“Work at the old Notting Hill station has recently uncovered these amazing advertising posters in non-public areas that date from c1956 – 1959 when the station’s lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. These are in an old lift passageway.

A variety of posters can be seen – some are London Transport’s own posters such as the ‘elephant’ by Victor Galbraith – but others include the Royal Blue sailor by Daphne Paddern.

They will be leaving these intact – and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible – which is why they’ve probably survived 50 odd years! Pretty cool I think you will agree.”

Harry Beck’s London Underground

I’ve unearthed a great BBC Four programme about Design Classics. This film is dedicated to Harry Beck’s wonderful London Underground tube map design.

This is a great history lesson for those that live in London and want to know all about the tube map that they use every day.

Enjoy…
